Difficult times: 2 Timothy 3.1 VOTD

“But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come.”

2 Timothy 3.1

The apostle Paul prepares his son in the faith, Timothy, for the worst. The last days are now. The difficult times in the church have come because of people’s sins, 2 Tim 3.2-4. Timothy must know how to deal with them, v. 5. He must know how to recognize them, v. 5, and what their tactics are, v. 6-7. Here’s what they’re really doing, v. 8, but their reach will have its limits, 9.

Understanding our times will give us ways to cope and keep us from falling into helplessness. What signs of difficult times do you see?

6-27-2017 Jesus And The Last Days

“He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God” (1 Peter 1:20-21 NKJV). God “has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:2 NKJV). “These last times” and “these last days” all refer to the same time period–when Jesus lived on earth. “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:4-5 NKJV). It was the “last days” for Jews to be God’s chosen people, not “the last days” for the world, itself!

The Last Days

By J. Randal Matheny © 2015

Grateful are we to live in the last days,
In the fullness of time, when Jesus Christ was born
Of a virgin, God in the flesh, when humble praise
Broke out among shepherds, the holy kingdom torn
From Israel, and given to those who’ll bear
The fruit of God. The days of mystery
Have ended. Now’s the reign of the true Heir,
The Seed of the Gospel. The kingdom’s key
Is offered to all. The call of the Lamb is strong,
He chimes the hour to watch. He bids take sides.
No neutral ground can be held—’tis right or wrong—
He brings a sword, the faith a house divides.
The lines are clear, shall we draw back and blur
The truth? Or speak because we love our Lord?
The priceless pearl is ours — shall we prefer
The home’s comforts, or the eternal reward?
The King returns! The Sovereign seeks his own!
The morning dawns, angelic trumpets ring!
We greet his appearing, in clouds, on cherub’s wing!
What glory to rise with him and see his throne!

10-7-2015 The End Times

The expression “end times” doesn’t even occur in the Bible! This is doctrine invented by people who “twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures” (2 Peter 3:16 NKJV). In “the last days,” Scriptures teach us (1) the Holy Spirit would be poured out on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-21); (2) God’s Spokesman would be Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:2); (3) scoffers would come (2 Peter 3:3); (4) sins would make for “grievous” times (2 Timothy 3:1-5). If those “last days” are just happening now, then: Jesus Christ has not preached, the Holy Spirit has no Scriptures, no one has yet challenged the Bible, and sins have not be committed!!! If not, why not? The expression, “last days,” was upon the Jews as God’s chosen people, NOT for the entire world!

8-3-2015 Who Is The Antichrist?

In the First Century, John wrote: “Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour” (1 John 2:18 NKJV). To those who still think “the Antichrist is coming,” John said many had come “even now,” the “now” being in the First Century. To those who are looking for “the Antichrist,” John said “many antichrists” had already come then. To those who mistakenly think we are now living “in the last days,” John said it was “the last hour” then! There is NO ONE “Antichrist” in Scripture, but there are many who twist Scriptures to make it seem there is. Jesus said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” Who is “antichrist?”
