We had put this song together for our puppet ministry since we wanted everything to be a cappella. As funny and crazy as the song gets, it’s sad to think of the number of excuses we have heard people use to get out of anything church related.

This song dedication is going out to Ed Boggess! Thanks for the reminder Ed!

What Type Of Things Written

Like Ron, I still use the “pen to paper” motto as well. I use a 3×5 sheet of folded paper to write my grocery lists on; write my list of songs that I lead on the Lord’s Day; write the library class schedule down when I substitute in the public school libraries; jot down ideas and thoughts for future blog articles.

Saturdays are like any other day for me. Whatever needs to be done is done. This morning, I’ll go grocery shopping, get my song list ready for the song service tomorrow, write and post another article to my blog, study my adult Bible class lesson to present tomorrow morning, and walk my dog (or rather she walks me!) :).

The Precious Book Divine

How precious is the Book divine,
By inspiration giv’n!
Bright as a lamp its precepts shine,
To guide my soul to heav’n.

Holy Book divine!
Precious treasure mine!
Lamp to my feet and a light to my way
to guide me safely home.

It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts,
In this dark vale of tears;
Life and light and joy imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

Holy Book divine!
Precious treasure mine!
Lamp to my feet and a light to my way
to guide me safely home.

This lamp, through all the tedious night
Of life, shall guide our way,
Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day.

Holy Book divine!
Precious treasure mine!
Lamp to my feet and a light to my way
to guide me safely home.

I love this song as arranged by L.O. Sanderson, and it seems few know it. Anyone know where I can get a good recording of this hymn? I’d like to use it in a gospel meeting series I filmed.

How do I face Mondays? Like every other day, with a smile on my face, and a song in my heart, that God has granted me another day to serve Him and my fellow man.

Song in My Heart Today

The song in my heart today is Victory in Jesus. Regardless of the trials and tribulations of the day, I always have a victory in Jesus.

A unique practice in our congregation, is that for Sunday evening worship, we sing two songs, have a reading from God’s word, and then a prayer. We go through this same cycle until it is time to offer the invitation, then a concluding Scripture is read, a closing song is offered, then we offer the Lord’s Supper. After that, announcements and a concluding song is sung.

Be With Me, Lord

When I was a kid going to Mid-South Youth Camp outside of FHU we always finished the very last evening devotional by singing this hymn. The memory of those evenings touches me even now.

It is a moving thing when songs come together in a perfectly married state, when the words and music complete each other, when neither dominants the other. It creates a kind of synergism between words and notes, where the sum is greater than the parts. I wonder if this is why God chose to include music in our worship to Him. Well written hymns have the potential to reach into the deepest recesses of our souls and move us in ways nothing else can.

My favorite verse of my favorite hymn is the third one:

Be with me, Lord!
No other gift or blessing
Thou couldst bestow
could with this one compare–
A constant sense
of Thy abiding presence,
where e’er I am,
to feel that Thou art near.

I have two: “Where Could I Go?” and “…

I have two: “Where Could I Go?” and “I Need Thee Every Hour.”

These two really mean a lot to me.
