5-9-2017 Suicide Or Salvation? (1)

“Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’ And they said, ‘What is that to us? You see to it!’ Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself” (Matthew 27:3-5 NKJV). Judas saw the Jesus condemned whom he knew was “innocent,” and was “remorseful” (a word showing pain afterward). Jesus had used this very word to show a good result: “But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’ “He answered and said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it and went. (Matthew 21:28-29 NKJV). “Godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation” (2 Corinthians 7:10 NKJV).

You see to it!’ Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself” (Matthew 27:3-5 NKJV). When Judas realized how bad his betrayal of Jesus was, he turned to the wrong people. He tried to give back the betrayal money to the people he had made the bargain with, but they refused. Remember a lesson from Judas Iscariot: the people who help you sin will not be the people who help you reform! The fleeting moment when Judas’ conscience hurt was met with coldness by the people who were condemning an innocent Jesus!

The money Judas thought meant so much before this moment, must have sounded cheap, indeed, as it jingled on the floor. Truly, “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV). And in the process, have ruined many innocent lives! “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches” (Proverbs 22:1 NKJV).

Suicide is only an option to someone who gives up on God. Forgiveness is with God. “If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared” (Psalm 130:3-4 NKJV). Christians must, “be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32 NKJV). Whatever you have done, if you repent, God can forgive it, and Christians must forgive you.

In July 2008 retired Denver executive John Beech…

In July 2008, retired Denver executive John Beech sent a check for $100,000 to a charity. It was postdated and accompanied by a sealed envelope. On the outside of the envelope it read “wait until you hear from coroner”. The charity opened the envelope anyway and found Beech’s Last Will and Testament, leaving his entire estate to the charity. It became clear Beech was planning to commit suicide. So faced with a choice, the charity director decided to keep the check and allow Beech to follow through with his planned suicide. What would you do: keep the check or contact authorities that might help prevent Beech from killing himself? This is Just-A-Minute.

One example of self-destructive behavior…

One example of self-destructive behavior in the New Testament is Judas. He not only committed physical suicide, but spiritual suicide as well.

True self-destructive behavior

Kenny McKinley, a former football player for the University of South Carolina and a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, was found in his Englewood, Colorado home Sept. 20 dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

McKinley’s former college coach, Steve Spurrier, said it was difficult to understand why the pro player took his own life. Each suicide appears to be a senseless case of self-destructive behavior. Little do we know of the pressures and problems that afflict peoples’ minds.

There are several organizations designed to help those whose despondency leads them to think or attempt suicide. But, there is something even more self-destructive than suicide. There is an eternal self destruction.

Jesus said, “The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak,” (John 12:48-49 ESV).

If one, after hearing Jesus’ words, decides to reject him, there are grave consequences. When Jesus sent his 70 disciples to preach the kingdom of heaven was near, he pronounced woes on Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum because the people of those cities decided to reject Jesus and his words. “It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you,” Jesus said to the people of these cities (Luke 10:14).

Rejecting the words and invitation of the Lord Christ is spiritual suicide, which is far worse than killing oneself. Ending ones’ life is tragic, certainly. But if one rejects the bread of life, one spiritually dies, which has far greater consequences.
