¶ The 100th anniversary of the beginning of World World I. Its effects are felt still, but only historians have much of an idea what it was all about. Maybe even they don’t. NYT says on June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France to end the war. Five years’ slaughter, only to go at it again a few years later. Continue reading

(#182) The Proverbs of Solomon 27:1-Who Knew?

Since God Created humans, only God can provide specific understanding of human behavior. God gave Solomon Divine Wisdom (1 Kings Chapters 3 and 10) to explain what and why behavior is as it is, and Proverbs 10:1-24:34 are randomly written, as if they were Solomon’s judgments about individual cases brought to him, or simply God-given explanations about life. New Testament passages may help see the continuation of Wisdom offered through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 27:1: “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Even the calendar is cause for humility! Who knew yesterday what would be today’s final: weather result? Stock Market margins? Family sickness and death? Earthquake or storm damage? Job benefit or loss? Accident tally? Sports results?

Truly God proves to know much more than we do, for “Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?” (1 Corinthians 1:20). All we can do is “number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12), that is, realize that every day we live brings us closer to death (Hebrews 9:27). “Boasting” is talk that has no substance, in other words, the person doesn’t know what he/she is talking about! “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit;’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’ But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4:13-17). It is not wrong to plan ahead, but it is wrong to think those plans are completely within our power to bring them about! Calendar humility is a reason to “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22).

There is nothing in Scripture that gives prior warning to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, for He taught: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (Matthew 24:6); “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42); “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44); “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming” (Matthew 25:13). ALL who have set the day or times for Jesus to return have been TOTALLY FALSE, completely discredited in their Bible knowledge of this event, and proven to not be a Prophet of God (Deuteronomy 18:21-22)!

Because we are ignorant about “tomorrow,” and the time of Jesus’ Second Coming, why not obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ today and then plan “if the Lord wills?” “He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

All Scriptures and comments are based upon the New King James Version, unless otherwise noted.

Make the most of today: Glenn Hitchcock

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who has failed a grade.

To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.

To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask an editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize the value of ONE DAY, ask a daily wage laborer who has kids to feed.

To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train.

To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who has avoided an accident.

To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow, a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.

Appreciation To My Many Christian Friends

As most of you know, today is another birthday for me. Actually, I’m celebrating the third anniversary of my 22nd year + 1. 🙂

There are many Facebook friends that I wrote personal notes to this morning, thanking them for their well-wishes for me on this day.

A person can never have too many friends. I pray that I’ll be a true and faithful friend in return.

Thank you TFR friends for your friendship as well. You are a bright light in an otherwise dark world. May God richly bless you and your work in the kingdom. I’m reminded of the encouraging words of the apostle Paul:

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Bridegroom of Blood!

No it’s not a movie starring Vincent Price, or for you young whippersnappers, a movie written and directed by Tim Burton. It’s from an odd piece of a story found in Exodus 4:24-26 involving Moses and his wife, Zipporah. It’s after the burning bush incident. Moses with his family in tow is headed back to Egypt.

It becomes apparent that Moses has not kept the Abrahamic covenant regarding the circumcision of his own son. Moses finds his own life in jeopardy as the Lord is about to kill him. Zipporah, his Midianite wife, whips out a knife, circumcises their son and flings the bloody foreskin on Moses’ foot. By this act she saves her husband’s life. Though I have read numerous explanations I don’t pretend to understand all the ins and outs of this story. It seems a kind of exchange took place. By this last minute bloody act, Moses’ own blood was not spilled. He was brought back into compliance with the covenant. Continue reading

My best day of the week

“Today” is always my best day of the week.
My favorite moment is “right now.”
In other words, “It’s all good!”

Despising Our Youth

I’m wondering if we are despising our youth in the Lord’s church today?

Is today better than 100 years ago. I gu…

Is today better than 100 years ago. I guess there are a few ways to answer: since I am only half that age, I can’t say. Since I live today, I can say that today is good – just as each and every one of us can when we walk with the Lord. If we can’t say that today is good, let us take inventory about the things in life. Many times I take inventory and see that I need to “purchase” what is lacking, my inventory stock is down. Today is a good day – I refuse to have a bad day!
