Some of you have heard the story of the rich man and Lazarus. For those who have not, let me briefly state it.
Lazarus was a poor beggar who lived nearby a rich man. Each day the rich man went about his business he saw Lazarus. Opportunities abounded for him to do well, but he did not. Finally, the two of them died. In the eternal realm – for they both went there – Lazarus was on one side while the rich man was on another side. Only this time, the surroundings were reversed. Lazarus was secure and comforted while the rich man was in torments. What made the torments all the more painful was that the rich man always saw before him his failures. He was able to see the very man he chose not to help being comforted. The rich man calls out to Abraham (the one comforting Lazarus), and asked for Lazarus to be sent to the realm of the living (those still living on earth) that they might be warned not to do what he has done. Abraham said to him that a warning is already before them.
That warning is found in the words of the Bible (cf. Luke 16:19-31). This brief story packs a powerful punch. When we die we also will be in the realm of eternity. The warning is before you. Which side do you want to be on? RT
