What does the Bible say about kindness?

By: Douglas M. Williams, Sr.

“What is desired in a man is kindness” (Proverbs 19:22).

“And on her tongue is the law of kindness” (Proverbs 31:26).

With many other things, this is said of a good woman.

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you (Ephesians 4:32).

The Bible tells us that love is kind (1 Corinthians 13:4); that we are to put on kindness (Colossians 3:12; and to have brotherly kindness (2 Peter 1:7).

As Jesus was perfect in every way, He is our great example of kindness. The following story illustrates the importance of being kind.

Some people were talking about who were some great people in our world. As some names were mentioned someone said, “and Mary.” The question was asked, “Who is Mary?”

The answer was given that she was a beautiful humble girl working at a restaurant. She had a smile for everyone each morning and throughout the day. A person could come in grouchy and with a frown, but Mary’s smile and kindness would make them feel better.

Even little children liked to go to that restaurant with their parents because of the attention Mary gave them and the wonderful attitude she had.

Because of Mary’s smile, love, and kindness, regardless of their troubles, everyone would feel like singing, “O what a beautiful morning. O what a beautiful day –everything’s going my way.”

Mary loved everyone and everyone loved her. Because of her kindness and pleasant ways, she made people feel better. She was like a spring morning, a song, a child’s laughter, or like sunshine breaking through a dark cloud.

Be sure to remember the importance of kindness and practice it as you remember the kindness of Jesus and the example of Mary.
