The purpose of discipline from a parent to the child is not to abuse the body, belittle the mind or break the spirit.
The purpose of discipline is to teach. The very essence of discipline rides upon the word disciple which means a student or a learner. Students are meant to learn, but they cannot learn without a teacher … hence, we see the true and godly purpose of discipline.
If the act of discipline does not teach it is not true godly discipline. Discipline involves more than the body; discipline must involve all aspects that makes us human: body, soul and spirit. As godly parents this must be the goal of discipline because a failure to do so means we have missed the lesson that discipline is supposed to teach all who are involved.
“A rod and reproof impart wisdom,
but a child who is unrestrained brings shame to his mother.” (Proverbs 29:15 NET)
