Rising Joy, by Vicki Matheny
Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is trustworthy, and he will in fact do this. 1 Thessalonians 5.23-24
When it comes down to it, there is nothing that I can do to assure my salvation. It is completely dependent on God’s grace. He is the one that makes me completely holy through the washing of my soul with the blood of Jesus. I have to make that contact.
That does not mean that God does not expect anything from me, that he will do it all for me. I must accept his conditions to receive his grace. I have to obey the commandments of Jesus.
Paul also gives some instructions on how to conduct ourselves in 5.12-22. Basically we are in this walk together. No one can go it alone. We are to keep watch for one another. When we see someone doing wrong, we should correct that person realizing that we might one day stand corrected. We should help those who are weak, not dismiss them as unimportant. We should pursue what is good for one another. Rejoice, pray, and give thanks. That will help us to keep the proper perspective. Paul also encourages us to examine all things. We are to always compare what we are taught to the scriptures so that we can keep what is true. Stay away from every form of evil.
If we live in this manner, when we fall and we will, God’s grace will cleanse us and keep us blameless when the Lord returns to call us to eternity.
