How did Jesus do it? He came with glad tidings: preaching good news to the poor, healing the brokenhearted, proclaiming liberty to captives, sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed. It was good news, good news, good news to the people who were most broken by sin – prostitutes and tax collectors welcomed before the Pharisees (bad news was reserved for the religiously smug). He never condoned the sin of those he welcomed but he focused on the possibilities of transformation. Good news has reviving power.
