“…And with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you.” (Psalm 81:16)
Dissatisfaction can cause a loss of more than our contentment – it can cause a loss of greater blessings that would have come our way had we not lost our patience (you know, that stuff that keeps us from giving up, otherwise known as endurance)…or our faithfulness to God’s ways as in the context of the quoted scripture so poignantly proclaims (you can also think of Matthew 6:33 and its context); for it is in this “Psalmy” section of scripture that God tells a rebellious people that he could have given them much more than water from the rock to solve their problems – the rock would have provided honey.
Honey from a rock?! Talk about a visualization. Talk about a whole new spin on the sweet treat known as “rock candy”. God says that his blessings would have provided the real deal to Israel. No artificial sweetener – no imitation – but pure refined nectar from the flowers of the field that Solomon’s glory couldn’t rival (there’s Matthew 6 again, specifically verses 28-29).
May God help us all to remember the wisdom of trusting in his ways; and may we keep in mind that God’s ways provide the sweetness of life that comes in its due time (1 Timothy 6:6-8).
